Blog v Wiki

One of the major differences between a blog and a wiki is that a wiki is focused on sharing knowledge, while a blog focuses more on opinions. This difference alone sets the two apart, as they require different ways of providing the two. In a wiki, there can be multiple authors who will continuously edit, add, and update information on the page. On the other hand, blogs have single authors (most of the time) and focus on single posts, in which the author would interact with whoever is reading in the comments section.

A similarity the two share is that they both are accessible to anyone in the world. This is great because it allows for people to be able to use the two and maybe connect them in a way. Someone could read a wiki and gather information, then visit a blog on the same topic and use someone's opinion on the topic in order to form a conclusion of their own. In an article by CIO, in order to explain the importance of this convergence, John K. Waters wrote that, "at the heart of all social software worthy of the label is a dynamic group environment that allows individuals to interact in a way that essentially combines their intelligence and/or capabilities" (CIO). Blogs and wikis, when used together, definitely accomplish this.

Blogs can also be used in collaboration to complete projects at work or school, or to promote a companies products. They can be made private so that only group members would have access and everyone in the group may contribute to each other's ideas. It is a nice way of getting people to contribute more, especially if they are quieter, as having a place to put their ideas down for people to see may be easier than speaking up. It is also a great way to turn a hobby into an income generation tool, as some bloggers collaborate with companies by promoting their products and end up getting paid a good amount. In an article by Virgin, Lucy Mcguire quotes a blogger who wrote "Collaborating with brands through affiliate link schemes (for example, Skimlinks or Reward Style) is one of the most powerful things you can do to grow your blog into a business" (Virgin). This type of collaboration is effective as it grows your own brand and helps your blog gain more followers.
